On Saturday, April 8, 2017, St. Petersburg Housing Authority (SPHA) staff volunteered their time at the Stand Down for Homeless Veterans at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. The purpose of the event was to provide resources to local, homeless veterans to assist them in bettering their circumstances.
SPHA staff provided information to the veterans about the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program, which is specifically designed to house homeless veterans. Through the program, SPHA works closely with the VA, who is responsible for identifying veterans for potential participation in the program. SPHA then determines the income eligibility for each veteran in accordance with regulations for the Housing Choice Voucher program, before issuing the special vouchers. Veterans in the VASH program are also required to work with the VA Case Managers for individualized treatment programs, with the goal of helping them attain self-sufficiency. SPHA is allocated 275 VASH vouchers, and vouchers are available now for eligible veterans.
